This list is far from complete, as there are many wonderful resources available to Veterans and their families. These particular ones have helped me find peace and stillness in my own journey. Consider it a starting point—and if you know of others that could bless our community, please share them with me.

This Resource List Helped At Least One

For the Soul

In this section I wanted to outline a few resources that have helped me in my spiritual journey.

Community - A Church That Embraces Vets

My church family has been a cornerstone of my healing. At Real Life Church Sacramento, I’ve discovered my God-given identity, purpose, and calling through outreach, small groups, and serving within the church. Our Lead Pastor, whose family includes veterans, understands that service can deeply transform a person. The pastoral team shares this heart, offering considerations for veterans—and today, our Veterans Small Group continues to grow, now numbering around 30 members.

Identity, Purpose, Calling - A Good Book

The Warfighter’s Study Bible has become my Bible of choice. It offers powerful insight into the unique experiences of those who serve and highlights scriptures that speak directly to veterans. I encourage you to begin with the section in the center containing the Bible-based guides and spend time reflecting on the recommended passages.

Mentorship - Life Build Coaching

I felt truly blessed to join a small group at Real Life Church called Life Build during a season of healing. Regina’s Life Build curriculum provided the perfect blend of practical mentoring and spiritual guidance, helping me grow into my God-given identity, purpose, and calling. I wear a small pendant she gave me as a daily reminder, and I wholeheartedly recommend any program or small group she leads—her guidance has been life-changing.

For the Mind

My time in service came before mental health support for veterans became more accepted. Back then, it wasn’t often discussed—it even felt taboo. The government pours tens of thousands of dollars into shaping how we walk, talk, act, and think as warriors, yet gives us just a single day of preparation to return to civilian life. Even if you don’t need help, you may be the one to help someone else who does.

Community - Disconnect to Reconnect (D2R)

Located in Northern California, this organization is committed to uniting veterans in outdoor settings that foster connection and healing. I’ve attended a few of their events, and each time I’ve been welcomed with open arms—I’ve never felt like an outsider.

Community - Wounded Warrior Project (WWP)

This summer, I had the privilege of participating in several Wounded Warrior Project events in Northern and Southern California. Each event was thoughtfully organized, and the staff went out of their way to make everyone feel welcome, regardless of service branch. Check their website, and if you qualify, I encourage you to sign up.

Community - Mission Fish

This organization supports both warriors and first responders, and their events are always thoughtfully organized. They have a genuine heart for service, and through them I’ve built meaningful connections with other veterans. There’s something special about fishing alongside fellow warriors that fosters deep bonds. I always look forward to their events and wholeheartedly recommend them.

Knowledge - Waking Up from War

Last year, during a challenging season, I discovered this book on Amazon. It helped me better understand the struggles I was facing and reassured me that I wasn’t alone in experiencing issues related to my military service. The book also highlighted something vital: one of the greatest gifts a veteran can have when transitioning out of military life is a strong, supportive community.

Knowledge - The Disconnected Man

Though the book was a short read, it challenged me to reflect deeply. Coming to terms with how the “flattened effect” had impacted my family after my service was difficult, but this book struck a chord with me. It was a call to action, urging me to continue fighting for the well-being of my family.

For the Body

Taking care of your body is essential. Below are some of the things that have helped me over the years.

Community - King Krav Maga

This isn’t simply a gym—it’s a place where community comes first. While you’re improving your fitness, you’ll also form meaningful connections. The focus is on self-defense, and it doesn’t feel like any other fighting gym I’ve been to. It’s family-friendly, so your kids are welcome too. Chris is a dear friend and mentor, and I can’t say enough about the positive impact of his gym.

Community - F3 Nation: Fitness, Fellowship, Faith

This men’s small group combines fitness with fellowship. With many groups spread across different areas, I’ve had the chance to attend several and always enjoyed the experience. It’s another place where you can connect with others, build relationships, and grow your network.

Community - Spartan Obstacle Course Racing

You’ll understand once you cross the finish line. These races are incredibly fun, and there’s an immediate sense of camaraderie on the course. On 9/11 in 2021, I ran a Trifecta Weekend in Seattle and found myself racing alongside two Army guys I had never met before, creating a connection I’ll always remember.

Knowledge - Spartan FIT!

Over the years, I had let myself become sedentary and wasn’t taking proper care of my body. This book reminded me of the lessons I learned in the Navy about fitness and nutrition. It reignited my motivation, helping me jumpstart both my body and mind and return to a healthier lifestyle.

For the Wallet

Make your VA claim sooner rather than later—learn from my experience. On active duty, no matter what challenges we face, we’re often just given our Vitamin “M” and told to carry on. Left unaddressed, these issues can develop into long-term health concerns that deserve attention.

Community - Vet Tix

Looking to build a community of friends fast, then checkout the free tickets on Vet Tix.  This organization is great and connecting veterans with free tickets for a nominal handling fee.  Be the guy with the free tickets and watch your energy level and community grow!  Pro tip - If you sign up to get multiple tickets then actually use all of the tickets.

Knowledge - VA Claims Success

This book gave me a clearer understanding of the VA claims process and provided many practical links. There are likely many other helpful resources, but this is the one that helped me take the first step.
